Thrifting in Owings Mills
The Gates of Owings Mills Blog is featuring several of our favorite thrifting tips to help you shop this May. Head to your favorite thrift store in Owings Mills, MD for a new (to you, at least) coffee table, jacket, record, or book. Thrift stores can be a great place to reinvent your style and try something new. Follow our tips to get the most out of your thrifting experience.
Tip One: Set a Budget
Set a budget before you head out on your shopping trip. We recommend limiting your budget to fifteen or twenty-five dollars. This will help keep you from spending too much at the thrift store on things you don’t need. Bring the money in cash, so you’re not tempted to overspend. Up your budget if you’re planning on buying bigger items like furniture.
Tip Two: Alter
Don’t be afraid to alter the clothing you find at thrift stores. Of course, you don’t want to pick up any items that require too much alteration. Minor stains, cutting out shoulder pads, or even cutting jeans to make shorts are all simple alterations that don’t take too much time to put together. If you need to totally alter a garment to make it work for you, it’s probably best to leave it on the rack.
Tip Three: Check Everywhere
You never know where your next big find will come from. Don’t be afraid to really comb through the racks. Visit sections you would usually ignore, look through the shoes and the watches, and try on a jacket with a funky pattern or a pair of overalls. Reinvent your look at your local thrift store.
Tip Four: Bring a Friend
Bring a friend on your thrifting adventure. Come up with a challenge to make thrifting more fun (for example, finding a whole outfit for twenty dollars). Your friends will give you honest feedback on that windbreaker or blazer you’re about to buy.
